The last leg...

The kitchen
Precious was in charge of cutting, planing and sanding planks from the blue gum logs.

Darryl made a jig using the chainsaw to cut the planks.

Now that the planks are ready, Darryl starts to make the kitchen counters.

These will be the legs for the counter top.

Support struts between the legs. Total span of just on 4m.
Darryl made a false base on which he will lay logs and encase them in epoxy resin.
Hot glueing all gaps and joins so that the epoxy doesn't seep through.

The false base and box is ready....
The wood and the first layer of epoxy is in. It cures for 24 hours before the next pouring.

3 days (3 pourings) later... the epoxy resin now needs to cure for a further 48 hours before the box is removed and the resin polished.

Now the counter top that holds the sink.
The boxes needed to cater for the base of the sink.

The basin counter top ready for sanding and polishing.

Windows
We had the large A-frame window tinted so people outside can't see in during the day.

Shelving in the kitchen.
We used the planks that Precious had worked....
....Placed them then varnished them using Woodoc 25.

The finished product...

Trap door
We built a trap door from the lounge with stairs that lead under the house to the 'Safari area.'
Firstly, Darryl and Timo positioned 2 logs for step trusses using block and tackle.
Then he trimmed them to the correct length.

Then Darryl cut the trap door into the floor.

These two logs were bolted into place.

The first step is in!
We used old scaffold planks as the step treads to add character.

The Safari area....
We've built a pool underneath the rock ... and planted a garden.
Next year's project will be make a water feature here with a pump to send the water to the top of the rock to trickle down into the pool below.
Also it will be a much needed drinking pool for Nungu, the porcupine,  and all the birds.

Here's Nungu on a nightly visit for his dinner.
This was taken while we were standing next to these wooden pots in the above picture looking down on him - a meter away...
